Adored by locals and tourists, Sintra will most certainly sweep you off your feet. With its picturesque architecture and rich landscape it's widely known as the first centre of European Romantic architecture. Today, it's deservedly included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. And the best part? Sitting in this natural richness and history is our very own Quinta Velha, a private villa that accommodates up to 19 guests.
At the beginning of the century, Ferdinand II transformed what was once a monastery into a castle, displaying an uncharacteristic use of Gothic, Egyptian, Moorish and Renaissance styles. Leveraging on the the natural richness surrounding the soon to be Palace, he also brought exotic species of trees to elevate the contrast between colours and textures.
These two palaces, along with other major landmarks such as Moorish Castle, St. Peter's Church, Monserrate Palace, and Seteais Palace interact with each other and with the landscape in a very special way.
Right in the heart of the town is the Royal Palace, a building that dates to early 15th and 16th centuries with a minimalist gothic exterior and an interior filled with decorative state rooms. The façade is adorned with tiles, to this day the finest example of the technique there is.
