The city of Porto is most famous for its namesake wine – port — so we absolutely recommend for you to embark on a porto wine tasting! Port Wine is actually produced in the Douro Valley, but it is the city of Porto that gives the name to the wine as that’s where the wine ages, so you’ll get to see the wine barrels… magic! There are several wine cellars to visit and are all located directly across the Douro River from Porto in Vila Nova de Gaia. A 15-min drive Casas das Caldeiras.
Nearly all wine cellars provide guided tours and tastings where not only will you sample on different Port wine varieties, but also learn about the history of the house you are visiting and a broader history of Port wine. There are dozens of Port wine cellars and we know one can feel a bit uncertain about which are really worth the visit, thus, we decided to make your lives a bit easier and we narrowed down to one wine cellar that we love and where you can’t go wrong.
Graham’s — You’ve probably heard of Graham’s port wine, if not, you’re missing out as they make excellent port and have a truly great “port lodge” in Vila Nova de Gaia, which is home to, hands down, the best bar in Porto, known as Vinum Restaurant and Wine Bar. Overlooking the Douro River, Porto, Vila Nova de Gaia, and the D. Luís I Bridge, this hidden gem is a must-stop — and while you’re at it, ask the mixologist to craft up some refreshing cocktails made with port wine! You won’t regret it!
